Alton Castle was built close to Alton Towers, the home of the Earl of Shrewsbury, for his cousin. Throughout most of the 20th century, it was used as a boy’s boarding school before being purchased by the archdiocese in 1994. A request for its renovation was made on condition it was used as a children’s retreat centre and since then many thousands of children have enjoyed residential and day visits to the castle.
The castle is also available for private hire for weddings, parties and as a film location.
