How to restore wooden flooring

One of the many great things about having a wooden floor is that even when it’s starting to look a bit tired and worn, you can bring it back to life and there aren’t many other flooring options that boast this benefit.

If your wooden floor is starting to show signs of ageing and is in need of some TLC, it’s a simple case of deciding to restore it. Once you’ve made the decision that it needs restoring it’s down to you to decide whether you’re going to tackle it yourself or leave it down to the professionals.

DIY Floor Restoration

If you’ve decided to restore wooden flooring yourself you need to plan it carefully to make sure the job is done properly! There are four steps to the restoration project:

• Preparation
• Sanding
• Staining (if you want/require)
• Finishing

The first thing you need to do is completely clear the room, once that’s done you’ll have a chance to see where it needs repairing before you start. The best option is to hire a sander as this will provide a better result. The important thing to remember with sanding is to work from coarse to fine paper to achieve the best results.

If you choose to stain your floor this should be done immediately after sanding. Completely remove the dust then apply your finish, it can take up to 2-3 coats to achieve your desired result. Start from the outside and work your way in and remember not to walk over it until it’s completely dry.

Get the Professionals in

It’s worth taking into consideration that to achieve your desired look it will require you to invest a lot of your time into the project. Alternatively you could choose to get the professionals in. The professionals do it every day and will have all the necessary equipment to make sure the job is done efficiently and to a high standard.
